Settling In Ideas
Some Helpful Ideas for Helping Your Child Settle Into Building Blocks Early Childhood Centre.
Settling into a new environment such as new working situation, a new home, a party where we don’t know anyone, can be hard for us as adults. Considering our children don’t have the same span of experiences that we have had, settling into a new setting can be tricky for some children.
The following maybe helpful in getting your child ready for a new environment:

- Talk about the new centre. What your child will be doing throughout the day and playing with.
Use the routine that has been provided as a guide. (painting with paint brushes, drawing with
crayons, building with lego, mobilo and blocks, playing with dolls and cars, playing outside in
the sand pit, playing with clay and or playdough, singing, reading stories, dancing, eating,
dressing up and pretending) - Mention your child’s teacher’s names (provided), talk about spending time with them and
reminding your child/ren that these people will help them, will play with them, will sing with
them, will look after them - Buy a new back pack together, especially for Preschool. Let your child choose
- Visit the Centre before they are enrolled (if possible), or visit close by, and talk about going
there, how you will get there, what will happen each morning etc. Talk about the sounds they
will hear while they are at the Centre. (planes going over the playground, etc) - Choose something special to bring to the Centre from home (to keep in your child’s bag)
This could be something special that belongs to you. A simple reminder of home) - Talk quietly with your child about the things that may worry them about going (if appropriate)
Talk these concerns through - Talk with your child about what exciting things will happen at Preschool, your excitement is
contagious!
